Samsung to unveil its first Blue Phase LCD panel

Samsung Electronics announced that it has developed its first Blue Phase LCD panel, which will offer more natural moving images with an image-driving speed of 240Hz.

Samsung is planning to unveil the 15-inch Blue Phase LCD model at the upcoming SID(Society for Information Display) 2008 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition, which will be held in Los Angeles from May 18 to 23.

The new Blue Phase Mode can make its own alignment layers, eliminating the need for any mechanical alignment and rubbing processes. This reduces the number of required fabrication processes, resulting in considerable savings on production costs. Samsung expects to begin mass-producing its Blue Phase LCD in 2011. The LCD panels will be mainly used in TVs that require high-speed video reproduction.

Sony Ericsson is patenting a system that would tie songs to specific locations, says a new filing within the US. Proposed technology for a “location dependent music search” would use GPS or a similar mapping method to determine the phone’s location and promptly find music associated with the area, whether on the device or on an Internet server. The feature would let users cue songs they associate with favorite areas or download songs from local artists.

Creative hops bandwagon with Vado camera

Creative today took a cue from the unusually successful Flip camera and launched the Vado. The Vado has no optical zoom and eschews the need for separate cables, hooking up to a computer through a swivel-out USB connector that also recharges the camera. The device is also one of Creative’s few explicitly Mac-compatible offerings and works with any Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later system as well as most modern Windows PCs. Versions ship in pink or silver at $100, with options for a carrying case ($15), extra battery packs ($15), a charging cradle ($30), and an AV-out cable ($10). Both the camera and the accessories should be available today.

We all know that protecting the environment has shifted from a nice-to-do to a must-do. One of the most promising, but still mostly unexplored, frontiers is green energy. As the world finds new ways to harvest nature to create power, it’s inevitable that designers and engineers will find increasingly innovative ways to mix this technology into our lives.

Created by Australian design firm Büro North in partnership with the Victorian Eco-Innovation Lab, the VEIL Solar Shades do more than just transfer sunlight into energy. They also, thankfully, look really damn cool. Unlike old skool solar panels, the shades have an organic, natural sloping design. The pattern across the top looks like the veins of a leaf, harkening to the photosynthesis that solar collection is modeled after. Partially funded by the Aussie government, the VEILs are designed for schoolyards where they have the practical benefit of shading tykes from the hot sun.
